A Greener, More Affordable Home for Debbie
For Debbie, a resident of North East Hertfordshire, finding ways to reduce her household energy costs while making her home greener was becoming increasingly important.
With no gas supply in her road, Debbie’s home relied entirely on electricity for heating, with monthly energy costs reaching as much as £250. With her partner recently out of work and recovering from a heart attack, reducing household bills was an important priority.
Working with the National Energy Foundation’s Better Housing, Better Health scheme (NEF), Aura Retrofit carried out a whole-house energy assessment to identify where improvements could make the greatest difference. The assessment highlighted the potential benefits of solar energy, leading to the installation of 10 solar PV panels battery storage system. The project also included seven new Dimplex storage heaters, providing an upgraded heating solution for the property.
Following the improvements, Debbie moved to an Octopus Energy tariff designed for homes with solar and battery storage. Her monthly energy costs fell from as much as £250 to around £140, before dropping further to approximately £60 per month during the recent hot weather.
Debbie has joined the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), meaning she now receives payments for surplus solar electricity exported back to the National Grid.
The installation took around three days, and Debbie praised Aura Retrofit for managing the entire process and keeping her informed throughout.

A Warm Home Transformation for David and Jan
For David and Jan, residents of Baldock in North East Hertfordshire, an email from North Herts Council opened the door to a significant transformation of their home.
Living in a 1930s semi-detached property, the couple had been relying on an inefficient 20-year-old gas central heating system that was only heating their lounge. After learning about the Government’s Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme, they welcomed the opportunity to have their home assessed by Aura Retrofit, a trusted delivery partner operating in the area.

The improvements have made their home warmer, more energy efficient and significantly better equipped for the future, while helping to reduce their monthly fuel bills and, in their view, increase the property’s resale value.
Jan says she would encourage everyone to investigate whether they could benefit from available funding: “You don’t know if you don’t ask.”
The couple have also shared their experience with friends, family and neighbours, hoping others will discover the support available to improve their own homes.
