Grant funding follows a “whole house approach” to improving energy efficiency. Under PAS2035 regulations, certain pre-conditions must be met to ensure any energy-saving upgrades have a real impact on your property’s energy rating. This means you may need to install cavity, loft, or wall insulation before receiving a grant for a heat pump.

By reducing heat loss, your home requires less energy to stay warm, allowing for a smaller, more efficient boiler or heat pump. This improves your property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating and helps lower energy bills.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO), introduced in 2013, is the government’s main initiative driving these improvements. Now in its fourth phase (ECO4), it runs alongside other funding schemes like the Local Authority Delivery (LAD) and the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG), supporting homeowners until 2026.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative that helps homeowners transition from traditional heating systems to low-carbon alternatives like Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) and Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP). It provides up to £7,500 in grants to help cover the cost of installation, making energy-efficient heating more affordable. The scheme is available to homeowners and small businesses in England and Wales, as long as they meet eligibility requirements, such as replacing an existing fossil fuel boiler.

Warm Homes: Local Grant

The Warm Homes: Local Grant (WHLG) is a UK government initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency in low-income households across England. Set to commence in 2025, the scheme allocates £500 million over three years to fund energy performance upgrades and install low-carbon heating systems in privately owned homes with Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings between D and G. ​

Eligible households will receive improvements such as insulation, solar panels, and air source heat pumps, tailored to each home’s specific needs. These upgrades aim to reduce energy bills and lower carbon emissions. ​

ECO4 (CLOSING 31st DECEMBER 2026)

The ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation 4) is a UK government scheme that provides free or heavily subsidised energy-efficient upgrades for low-income and vulnerable households. It covers improvements like heat pumps, solar panels, insulation, and boiler replacements to help reduce energy bills and improve home efficiency. Funded by energy suppliers, ECO4 is aimed at homeowners and tenants in England, Scotland, and Wales who meet specific eligibility criteria, such as receiving certain benefits or living in a low-energy-rated home.

Warmer Homes: Social Housing Fund

The Warmer Homes: Social Housing Fund (WHSHF) is a UK government scheme that provides funding for energy-efficient upgrades in social housing properties. It supports improvements like heat pumps, solar panels, and insulation to help reduce energy costs and improve living conditions for tenants.

The scheme is aimed at social housing providers and local authorities, offering grants or subsidies to upgrade homes with low energy efficiency ratings. This initiative helps lower carbon emissions while making homes warmer and more affordable to heat.
