Homeowners living in off-gas grid properties now have even more support to make the switch to low-carbon heating, thanks to an increase in the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant to £9,000.
From 21 July 2026, eligible homeowners in England and Wales who currently heat their homes with oil or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can now receive a £9,000 government grant towards the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump. This is an increase from the previous £7,500 grant and provides an even greater incentive for rural households to upgrade to cleaner, more efficient heating.
What has changed?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme continues to help homeowners replace fossil fuel heating systems with renewable alternatives, but this latest update specifically supports homes that are not connected to the mains gas network.
If your property is heated by oil or LPG and meets the scheme requirements, you could now benefit from a grant worth £9,000 towards the cost of installing:
- An air source heat pump
- A ground source heat pump
This increased funding reflects the additional challenges and costs often faced by off-grid households and makes renewable heating more affordable than ever.

Who is eligible?
To qualify for the increased grant, your property must:
- Be located in England or Wales.
- Not be connected to the mains gas network.
- Not have a gas meter or capped gas supply.
- Not be connected to a heat network.
- Not be a new-build or self-build property.
- Currently use oil or LPG as its primary heating fuel.
During the application process, installers must confirm both the property’s off-gas status and that the existing heating system uses oil or LPG.
What isn’t included?
The £9,000 grant applies only to:
- Air source heat pumps
- Ground source heat pumps
The increased funding does not apply to biomass boilers or air-to-air heat pumps, which remain available under the existing Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules where eligible.
Important dates
The higher grant is available for new BUS voucher applications submitted on or after 21 July 2026.
If a voucher was issued before this date, it will remain at the previous £7,500 grant value.
The increased £9,000 grant is currently available until 31 March 2027, after which the government will review the level of support for off-gas properties.
